Litter build-up cleared from nature reserve lake

by Taylor January 6, 2025
written by Taylor

A build-up of litter, including discarded bottles, cans and clothing, has been removed from a lake at a nature reserve.

The rubbish, floating in Radipole Lake Nature Reserve in Weymouth was cleared by Dorset Council rangers and volunteers from Weymouth & Portland Marine Litter Project CIC.

A designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), the 83 hectare (205 acre) reserve is home to a range of wildlife including swans, kingfishers, otters and water voles.

The council said it was working with several organisations "to try and make sure litter here is not such an issue… but sadly it does seem to build-up very quickly."

Other items pulled from the water included a road sign, a highways barrier and a baby's dummy.

"Stuff that definitely shouldn't be in such a beautiful lake," the council said.

Councillor for Radipole Ward at Dorset Council, Matt Bell has been campaigning for improvements at the lake over the last couple of years.

Mr Bell has created a petition calling for the silt at the lake to be dredged and a number of longer-term works to be put in place to prevent a nearby park and car park from repeat flooding.

He said any upkeep work, including dredging , had to be agreed between Dorset Council, the Environment Agency, Natural England and the RSPB, which is a tenant at the site.

He added: "There is a desire to see this treasured part of our town rejuvenated amongst the community and key stakeholders.

"I will continue to push for improvements."

A further clean-up at the reserve has been planned for 25 May.

Attempted murder arrests after street fight

by Chloe January 6, 2025
written by Chloe

A man and a woman have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a fight broke out on a street in Sheffield.

Police were called at 20:36 BST on Saturday to reports of a large group of people fighting in the street on Knoll Close, in the Stocksbridge area of the city, with one person reportedly in possession of a knife.

A 34-year-old man was arrested at the scene but was taken to hospital where he remains in critical condition, South Yorkshire Police said.

A man, 37, and a woman, 35, were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remain in custody for questioning, the force added.

Knoll Close, Wheatacre Road and Ellorslie Drive have been cordoned off while police investigate the incident.

Victoria Road is also cordoned off from the junction of Glebelands Road to the junction with Bracken Moor Lane.

Senior investigating officer Det Ch Insp Andy Knowles said "Our investigation is at an early stage and we are working hard to establish the circumstances surrounding this incident."

The force is appealing for any witnesses or anyone with information to get in touch.

Why Cornwall loves its 'truly agricultural' show

by Chloe January 4, 2025
written by Chloe

From farmers showing their prize animals, or businesses showing off their latest ranges of machinery, the Royal Cornwall Show celebrates everything related to farming. Farmers, competitors, organisers, exhibitors and businesses have shared what makes the event special for them.

The Royal Cornwall Show has roots that go back to 1793 when the Cornwall Agricultural Society was formed and a ploughing match was held near Truro.

These days it is the Royal Cornwall Agricultural Association, and since 1960 the event has been based in Wadebridge.

Between Thursday and Saturday, about 120,000 are expected to attend this year to see some of the abundance of displays, from animals to food, floristry to forestry.

Ian Hodge, who has a dairy farm next door to the 95-acre showground, is one of the stewards in the countryside area and has been attending since the 1970s.

He followed in the footsteps of his father who started stewarding in 1968 and did it for 40 years.

Ian Hodge has met members of the Royal Family at previous shows

"My brother is a steward, my father in law is a steward, and my brother in law is a steward so we do quite a bit to help," he said.

"[My father] was chief steward of the main entrances and met all the royals – he loved it."

In that time he said he has only missed one day, in 1978, when his mother made him stay at home because he was unwell.

"I remember being mad that I had to go and spend the day with Nan… I made a miraculous recovery and away I went the next day," he said.

Mr Hodge said the event was a chance "to see everyone in the farming community coming together" from across the county and beyond.

"It's truly agricultural, unlike some of the others which have tended to move away from that… it is certainly in the top four or five shows in the country as being very agricultural, but it does cater for other things as well," he said.

His daughter Bea, 24, is chairwoman of the Wadebridge Young Farmers club and has been on site for several days preparing for the club's display, having won last year with the club's Dad's Army themed entry.

Work to resurface footpaths in part of Hull is due to begin on Wednesday.

The scheme will target paths in the city's West Carr area that have suffered wear and tear or been vandalised.

Hull City Council said the improvements were expected to take eight weeks, depending on the weather.

Closures will be in place but access will be maintained for residents at all times.
