Police launch murder probe into missing woman

by Camila January 9, 2025
written by Camila

Police searching for a 37-year-old woman not seen since 12 April have launched a murder investigation.

Paria Veisi, from Cathays, in Cardiff, was last seen at 15:00 BST on Saturday, when she left her place of work driving a black Mercedes GLC 200.

A 41-year-old man and a 48-year-old woman, who are both known to Ms Veisi, were arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of murder and remain in police custody.

Anyone with information that could help the investigation has been urged to contact South Wales Police's Major Crime Team.

Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Chief Inspector Matt Powell, said he currently "has no proof that Paria is alive".

"We have two people in custody, and at this stage we are not looking for anybody else in connection with this investigation," he said.

He added that the focus of the investigation remained on Paria's movements after she left work in the Canton area of the city.

The force added Ms Veisi's black Mercedes GLC 200 was located on 15 April in Dorchester Avenue, in the Penylan area.

Ms Veisi has long, curly, black hair and was last seen wearing a black zip-up gym top over a red top, black trousers, trainers and was carrying a small handbag.

Disputed traffic restrictions suspended by council

by Roman January 7, 2025
written by Roman

A controversial bus gate designed to limit traffic on a busy high street has been suspended.

The Portswood Road restrictions meant only buses, taxis and cyclists were permitted to travel along sections of the road at certain hours.

It was part of a six-month trial by Southampton City Council, which started in January.

The measures will be lifted from Thursday after what the council called a comprehensive three-month review and feedback from local residents.

Residents had protested against the scheme in March, with some saying it was causing "chaos" on neighbouring small residential streets.

Protestors marched through Portswood to voice their concerns and Michael Mace, a resident of Brookvale Road, said the whole scheme had been a "fiasco".

Two separate petitions were set up calling to get rid of the scheme, one of which attracted more than 5,000 signatures.

Protests were held in March by local businesses and residents about the rush-hour closure

Councillor Eamonn Keogh, Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, said: "Our approach has always been rooted in evidence and safety. We've used this trial to test the real-world impact of changes designed to make Portswood Broadway a safer, more attractive place to travel and spend time.

"The data shows that while the intended benefits are emerging, we must address unintended effects on surrounding roads. We are grateful to all residents and business who have taken the time to contact us to share their experiences with their thoughts about the trial."

The council said its assessment found a significant rise in traffic along nearby residential streets, including Brookvale Road, which raised concerns around road safety and congestion.

"We are acting decisively to relieve that pressure while continuing to explore long-term improvements. The council will work closely with residents in the coming months to understand why expected traffic patterns, such as use of Thomas Lewis Way, have not materialised. This engagement will help shape the next phase of the project, including possible new measures to protect residential roads and improve overall traffic flow," Mr Keogh said.

World fertility rates in 'unprecedented decline', UN says

by Anna January 7, 2025
written by Anna

Namrata Nangia and her husband have been toying with the idea of having another child since their five-year-old daughter was born.

But it always comes back to one question: 'Can we afford it?'

She lives in Mumbai and works in pharmaceuticals, her husband works at a tyre company. But the costs of having one child are already overwhelming – school fees, the school bus, swimming lessons, even going to the GP is expensive.

It was different when Namrata was growing up. "We just used to go to school, nothing extracurricular, but now you have to send your kid to swimming, you have to send them to drawing, you have to see what else they can do."

According to a new report by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the UN agency for reproductive rights, Namrata's situation is becoming a global norm.

The agency has taken its strongest line yet on fertility decline, warning that hundreds of millions of people are not able to have the number of children they want, citing the prohibitive cost of parenthood and the lack of a suitable partner as some of the reasons.

UNFPA surveyed 14,000 people in 14 countries about their fertility intentions. One in five said they haven't had or expect they won't have their desired number of children.

The countries surveyed – South Korea, Thailand, Italy, Hungary, Germany, Sweden, Brazil, Mexico, US, India, Indonesia, Morocco, South Africa, and Nigeria – account for a third of the global population.

They are a mix of low, middle and high-income countries and those with low and high fertility. UNFPA surveyed young adults and those past their reproductive years.

"The world has begun an unprecedented decline in fertility rates," says Dr Natalia Kanem, head of UNFPA.

"Most people surveyed want two or more children. Fertility rates are falling in large part because many feel unable to create the families they want. And that is the real crisis," she says.

Litter build-up cleared from nature reserve lake

by Taylor January 6, 2025
written by Taylor

A build-up of litter, including discarded bottles, cans and clothing, has been removed from a lake at a nature reserve.

The rubbish, floating in Radipole Lake Nature Reserve in Weymouth was cleared by Dorset Council rangers and volunteers from Weymouth & Portland Marine Litter Project CIC.

A designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), the 83 hectare (205 acre) reserve is home to a range of wildlife including swans, kingfishers, otters and water voles.

The council said it was working with several organisations "to try and make sure litter here is not such an issue… but sadly it does seem to build-up very quickly."

Other items pulled from the water included a road sign, a highways barrier and a baby's dummy.

"Stuff that definitely shouldn't be in such a beautiful lake," the council said.

Councillor for Radipole Ward at Dorset Council, Matt Bell has been campaigning for improvements at the lake over the last couple of years.

Mr Bell has created a petition calling for the silt at the lake to be dredged and a number of longer-term works to be put in place to prevent a nearby park and car park from repeat flooding.

He said any upkeep work, including dredging , had to be agreed between Dorset Council, the Environment Agency, Natural England and the RSPB, which is a tenant at the site.

He added: "There is a desire to see this treasured part of our town rejuvenated amongst the community and key stakeholders.

"I will continue to push for improvements."

A man and a woman have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a fight broke out on a street in Sheffield.

Police were called at 20:36 BST on Saturday to reports of a large group of people fighting in the street on Knoll Close, in the Stocksbridge area of the city, with one person reportedly in possession of a knife.

A 34-year-old man was arrested at the scene but was taken to hospital where he remains in critical condition, South Yorkshire Police said.

A man, 37, and a woman, 35, were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remain in custody for questioning, the force added.

Knoll Close, Wheatacre Road and Ellorslie Drive have been cordoned off while police investigate the incident.

Victoria Road is also cordoned off from the junction of Glebelands Road to the junction with Bracken Moor Lane.

Senior investigating officer Det Ch Insp Andy Knowles said "Our investigation is at an early stage and we are working hard to establish the circumstances surrounding this incident."

The force is appealing for any witnesses or anyone with information to get in touch.

Why Cornwall loves its 'truly agricultural' show

by Chloe January 4, 2025
written by Chloe

From farmers showing their prize animals, or businesses showing off their latest ranges of machinery, the Royal Cornwall Show celebrates everything related to farming. Farmers, competitors, organisers, exhibitors and businesses have shared what makes the event special for them.

The Royal Cornwall Show has roots that go back to 1793 when the Cornwall Agricultural Society was formed and a ploughing match was held near Truro.

These days it is the Royal Cornwall Agricultural Association, and since 1960 the event has been based in Wadebridge.

Between Thursday and Saturday, about 120,000 are expected to attend this year to see some of the abundance of displays, from animals to food, floristry to forestry.

Ian Hodge, who has a dairy farm next door to the 95-acre showground, is one of the stewards in the countryside area and has been attending since the 1970s.

He followed in the footsteps of his father who started stewarding in 1968 and did it for 40 years.

Ian Hodge has met members of the Royal Family at previous shows

"My brother is a steward, my father in law is a steward, and my brother in law is a steward so we do quite a bit to help," he said.

"[My father] was chief steward of the main entrances and met all the royals – he loved it."

In that time he said he has only missed one day, in 1978, when his mother made him stay at home because he was unwell.

"I remember being mad that I had to go and spend the day with Nan… I made a miraculous recovery and away I went the next day," he said.

Mr Hodge said the event was a chance "to see everyone in the farming community coming together" from across the county and beyond.

"It's truly agricultural, unlike some of the others which have tended to move away from that… it is certainly in the top four or five shows in the country as being very agricultural, but it does cater for other things as well," he said.

His daughter Bea, 24, is chairwoman of the Wadebridge Young Farmers club and has been on site for several days preparing for the club's display, having won last year with the club's Dad's Army themed entry.

The scheme will target paths in the city's West Carr area that have suffered wear and tear or been vandalised.

Hull City Council said the improvements were expected to take eight weeks, depending on the weather.

Closures will be in place but access will be maintained for residents at all times.
