Election candidates asked to submit manifestos

by Nathan February 7, 2025
written by Nathan

Candidates standing in Guernsey's general election are being encouraged to submit their manifestos for submission in a voter booklet.

The States Assembly and Constitution Committee said it had increased the number of pages available to candidates and had extended the submission window.

It said candidates had the option to provide two or four pages in the manifesto booklet, with submission due between 7 and 14 May.

Guernsey's general election is set to take place on Wednesday 18 June.

Deputy Carl Meerveld, the committee's president, said: "The key message to prospective candidates is please review the guidance, prepare your entry for the manifesto booklet in advance and submit early within the submission window."

The committee said the booklet would be delivered to all homes where at least one person was registered on the electoral roll.

Website option

Instructions, guidance and timelines for entries are available on the States' website.

It said each manifesto would have a summary on the first page and the information reproduced exactly as it has been submitted, with no design support offered by the States.

That means entries must be submitted in line with the specifications outlined in the online guide, said the committee.

Every candidate will also have the option of having their own page on the general election website.

Channel Islands Pride confirmed for June

by Rachel February 6, 2025
written by Rachel

The 10th annual Pride celebrations in the Channel Islands are set to take place in June, a local LGBTQ+ organisation has announced.

Channel Islands Pride said it was "thrilled" to reveal the celebration was due to take place on Saturday 21 June at the People's Park in Jersey.

The 2025 celebration's theme had been chosen as "louder, prouder, stronger" – which a spokesperson said was "both a celebration and a rallying cry".

Christian May, director of Channel Islands Pride in Jersey since its inception in 2015, said: "When we held the very first Channel Islands Pride in 2015, we had no idea just how much it would grow in a decade, both here in Jersey, and in Guernsey."

'Reflect on progress'

He added: "What began as a small but determined march has become a vibrant, inclusive celebration that brings together thousands of people from across our islands and beyond.

"As we mark 10 years of Pride, it's a moment to reflect on the progress we've made – not just in visibility, but in building a stronger, more united LGBTQ+ community here in the Channel Islands.

"But it's also a moment to acknowledge the challenges we continue to face, both locally and globally."

Mr May said he hoped the event would be attended by islanders and allies from "every corner of our community".

'Unique' festival celebrating Peterborough returns

by Amelia February 6, 2025
written by Amelia

A festival that celebrates a city, its diversity and "all the reasons we love it" is expected to welcome about 20,000 people, organisers have said.

Peterborough Celebrates is hosting its fourth annual event at Ferry Meadows this weekend with a "full-on" schedule of performances and activities.

It is free to attend and has been funded largely by Nene Park Trust with sponsorships from local businesses, but parking charges apply and donations are being welcomed.

Creative producer Simon Hollingworth said the event was a "unique experience" and the country park would be "buzzing" with activity.

'Amazing party'

Preparations have been under way over the past few days for one of the biggest events in Peterborough.

A silent disco was held on Friday in support of the Sense charity, ahead of the festival kicking off in full on Saturday morning.

Mr Hollingworth said the festival would have four large stages – the Community Stage, Big Top, Hay Bale Stage and Centre Stage – with almost 60 acts performing.

"It is going to be buzzing. Full of colour and full of people with so much going on," he said.

Nene Park Trust
The festival is taking place on 17 and 18 May at Ferry Meadows

The Community Stage line-up will feature performances from local groups such as Lucy's Pop Choir, Bharat Hindu Samaj, Ritu Ranga, Wansford Ukelele Folk and two up-and-coming bands featured by BBC Introducing. There will also be traditional Filipino and Lithuanian dancers.

There will be a variety of other musical and circus acts performing during the weekend, with food and drink on offer from around the world.

Last year, local dancers entertained the crowds, and many acts are due to take part again this weekend

Additionally, there will be fairground attractions and passenger boat rides at Overton Lake, and a chance to take part in climbing, archery, martial arts, rugby, football, and arts and crafts.

Mr Hollingworth added: "On Saturday night we have a Bhangra dance party – East meets West – in the big top led by this Punjabi dance troupe from Bradford.

"It is going to be an amazing party."

Following its success last year, the festival finale on Sunday will be marked with a Hindu Holi celebration, where people can throw coloured paints and streamers.

More than 2,000 paper hearts were created last year in support of the theme 'A Love Letter to Peterborough', but this year the festival is themed around butterflies

"Over the years we have had somewhere around 20,000 people [attend]," said Mr Hollingworth.

"We would hope to get similar numbers this year – you get people from such a range of communities that represent the city.

"It is a unique experience to bring everyone together."

A guide on getting to the festival, what to expect and a festival map and access information, has been put together on Nene Park Trust's website.

Conservationists want to track voles at wetlands

by Jessica February 1, 2025
written by Jessica

Conservationists have called on people to look for water voles that were reintroduced at a nature reserve last year.

A total of 116 water voles that were bred in captivity were released at Nene Wetlands in Northamptonshire.

However, follow-up surveys along parts of the River Nene are yet to record sightings.

Emily Luck, the water vole officer at the People's Trust for Endangered Species (PTES), said people often mistook them for rats but they were "more charismatic than rats".

"We are asking for volunteers to let us know where they are so we can target our conservation work," she said.

PA Media
Last year, 113 sites across Britain were surveyed, with water voles found at 47 of them

PTES is asking for vole-unteers to report sightings of the rodents across England, including Northamptonshire.

The population has declined by about 90% since the 1970s.

Last year, 113 sites across Britain were surveyed, with water voles found at 47 of them.

Historically water voles thrived along the River Nene, but PTES says habitat loss and predation by the non-native American mink are responsible for the fall in numbers.

The charity sited Dallington Brook in Northampton as one of the potential vole locations that was under-recorded.

Vole-unteers can choose from more 700 pre-selected riverbanks and streams or register their own location.

They are asked to record signs of water vole presence such as droppings, burrows, footprints, or the distinctive "plop" as the animal enters the water.

Ms Luck added: "[Voles] can live in almost any waterway so as long as they've got fresh vegetation, good soil to burrow into… it's ideal."

The survey initiative runs until 15 June.

Community champions urged to apply for new scheme

by Natalie January 29, 2025
written by Natalie

A new "community champion" scheme offering free use of leisure centres in parts of Surrey for local projects is calling for people to apply.

Everyone Active, which runs leisure centres in Haslemere, Godalming, Farnham and Cranleigh, has launched its Community Champions initiative, aiming to "recognise the dedication of those who go above and beyond".

Those involved in mentoring, promoting health and wellbeing, supporting inclusivity or leading environmental or cultural projects are urged to apply for the scheme, which is run in partnership with Waverley Borough Council.

Successful applicants will secure use of facilities at their local leisure centres to help them carry out their projects.

Steve Little, Everyone Active's contract manager, said: "We want to highlight the work of everyday heroes who are changing people's lives and inspiring others to make a positive impact in their communities.

"We encourage local people, community projects and charitable initiatives to get their applications in so we can support the fantastic work that you do."

Applications close on 12 June.

Those selected could also be shortlisted for the provider's Champions Awards in autumn.

Kika Mirylees, Waverley's councillor for community services, leisure and EDI, said it was a "fantastic initiative" highlighting "the incredible work being done by individuals who work tirelessly in our community".

She added: "It's an opportunity to celebrate their dedication and provide them with the resources they need to continue making a positive impact.

"I urge people to go ahead and apply at the soonest."

Train-mad couple say home has become 'selfie spot'

by Connor January 14, 2025
written by Connor

A train-mad couple who have adorned the whole front of their home in railway memorabilia have told how they are being inundated with visitors wanting to "come and take selfies".

Eric and Wendy Coupe, of Blackburn, Lancashire, said the quirky decor at their terraced house in Wellington Road "started with a bench and a clock" about 10 years ago.

They now have a range of colourful rail station signs both past and present from across the country.

"We've no idea how many there are," Mr Coupe said. "We've never had time to count, and there's more to come."

The rail enthusiasts run the East Lancashire Model Railway Organisation and were also inspired by the influence of Mr Coupe's father, who was an engineer for British Rail.

They said what began with a handful of signs 10 years ago has now become a full-time hobby, with the collection featuring both originals and replicas.

The signs come "from all different parts of the country" and are making the property "a landmark in Blackburn", the 66-year-old said.

He added that the oldest is a version of the British Railways sign which hangs above the Flying Scotsman.

Mr Coupe said the oldest sign is from British Railways

"A lot of people have signs in the back of sheds and you don't realise you have them," he said.

"And some of them are worth money and some aren't and some stations you realise don't exist anymore if you look carefully, like Blackpool Central."

"We've even got Weatherfield from Coronation Street," his wife said.

Mr Coupe said their neighbours "aren't bothered" by all the attention, and told them "you're doing a good job".

Six months of gas works to start on busy road

by Joseph January 11, 2025
written by Joseph

Gas main works that are set to close a town centre route for six months are about to begin.

The gas distribution company, Cadent, will be replacing 1.8 miles (3km) of gas pipes in Woodbridge Road, Ipswich, from Thursday.

The work, due to finish in October, was meant to start earlier this month, but a gas leak was found on a pipe further along the road and needed to be fixed first.

Project manager Gary Tidman said he was aware there would be some drivers unhappy with the disruption, but the works were "essential".

"We have a responsibility to make sure every property that uses gas has access to it 24/7, 365 days a year and these essential works will mean that we continue to deliver on that promise," he explained.

"We know it's far from ideal to have any sort of road closures or traffic management in place in what is a busy area, but we have worked hard with the local authorities to create a plan that keeps traffic flowing and maintains access for local businesses and residents."

The work will be completed in stages with the use of traffic lights and road closures to side roads to ensure traffic is able to flow.

Mr Tidman said Cadent had also planned the works during school half-term and the summer holidays, to keep "disruption to a minimum".

The work will see the current ageing metallic gas pipes, which date back to 1907, replaced with tough plastic pipes that are expected to last for decades, Cadent said.

Fire victims likely injured by building collapse, police say

by Rachel January 11, 2025
written by Rachel

Two firefighters and a member of the public who died during a fire at a business park sustained injuries in line with those "typically caused by the collapse of part of a structure", police have said.

Firefighters Jennie Logan, 30, and Martyn Sadler, 38, along with father-of-two Dave Chester, 57, were killed in the blaze that engulfed the Bicester Motion site on 15 May.

Thames Valley Police (TVP) said post-mortem examinations showed that all three died from multiple traumatic injuries.

Two other firefighters seriously injured in the incident remain in hospital in stable conditions, the force added.

TVP Assistant Chief Constable Dennis Murray said: "Our initial investigations suggest that all three sustained injuries in line with those typically caused by the collapse of part of a structure."

He said the force would make no further comment on the post-mortems' preliminary findings.

"This remains an unexplained death investigation and is being led by our Major Crime Unit, who continue to work with fire investigators and the Health and Safety Executive to ascertain the cause of the fire and the circumstances surrounding the sad deaths of Jennie, Martyn and Dave," he said.

"Our thoughts remain first and foremost with the families, friends and colleagues of Jennie Logan, Martyn Sadler and Dave Chester, as well as the injured firefighters and their loved ones, following this tragic incident."

Large plumes of smoke were filmed coming from one of the Bicester Motion buildings

The fire was reported at about 18:30 BST on Thursday and rapidly spread through a former aircraft hangar at the site on Buckingham Road, and a major incident was declared.

Ten fire and rescue crews were called to tackle the blaze as witnesses reported seeing black smoke in the sky.

Following the blaze, Bicester Town Council opened books of condolence, while church services and silences have also taken place.

Two gold plaques have been hung at Bicester Motion, with both signed: "Love from the Bicester Community."

Tributes have been paid from the Bicester community in the wake of the fire

Paying tribute last week, Mr Sadler's family said being a firefighter was "always in his blood", adding that he was "the true definition of a hero".

"Our world has fallen apart and our hearts are completely broken, but somewhere in amongst it all we are immensely proud of him and his unwavering bravery," they added.

The family of Ms Logan said her "bravery and fearlessness shone through right until the end."

"She will always be our hero and we are so immensely proud of her. Forever in our hearts," they said.

Mr Chester's family described him as "Bicester born and bred" with a "quirky sense of humour".

"He was not a victim but a hero, he died the way he lived – helping others and putting them ahead of himself."

Facebook
Tributes to the two firefighters and father-of-two said they were "the best of Bicester"

Nicholas Mawer, who represents Bicester North on Cherwell District Council, told the BBC those lost in the fire were "the best of Bicester".

"Thankfully these incidents are very rare but it's deeply affected the community," he added.

Ms Logan and Mr Sadler were members of Bicester Rugby Union Football Club (BRUFC), with Ms Logan on the Bicester Vixens women's team.

"We are a tight-knit club," BRUFC's chairman Paul Jaggers said.

"Obviously losing two of your members in any situation is really tough and it's had a profound impact."

A fundraiser launched by the club has raised more than £22,500 for the Fire Fighters Charity since the tragedy.

Announcing the deaths, Chief Fire Officer Rob MacDougall hailed the "unwavering bravery"

Bicester Motion is home to more than 50 specialist businesses, focused on classic car restoration and engineering on the former site of RAF Bicester.

It was home to RAF Bomber Command in World War Two and became redundant in 2004.

The site partially reopened on Wednesday, in what the business park called a "phased return to work for on-site businesses".

Litter build-up cleared from nature reserve lake

by Taylor January 6, 2025
written by Taylor

A build-up of litter, including discarded bottles, cans and clothing, has been removed from a lake at a nature reserve.

The rubbish, floating in Radipole Lake Nature Reserve in Weymouth was cleared by Dorset Council rangers and volunteers from Weymouth & Portland Marine Litter Project CIC.

A designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), the 83 hectare (205 acre) reserve is home to a range of wildlife including swans, kingfishers, otters and water voles.

The council said it was working with several organisations "to try and make sure litter here is not such an issue… but sadly it does seem to build-up very quickly."

Other items pulled from the water included a road sign, a highways barrier and a baby's dummy.

"Stuff that definitely shouldn't be in such a beautiful lake," the council said.

Councillor for Radipole Ward at Dorset Council, Matt Bell has been campaigning for improvements at the lake over the last couple of years.

Mr Bell has created a petition calling for the silt at the lake to be dredged and a number of longer-term works to be put in place to prevent a nearby park and car park from repeat flooding.

He said any upkeep work, including dredging , had to be agreed between Dorset Council, the Environment Agency, Natural England and the RSPB, which is a tenant at the site.

He added: "There is a desire to see this treasured part of our town rejuvenated amongst the community and key stakeholders.

"I will continue to push for improvements."
