'Challenging time' for gymnasts after site sold

by Aria May 25, 2025
written by Aria

A teenage gymnast from east London who has faced a "challenging time" since losing her permanent training facility has been selected for two national squads.

Olivia Kosinska, 14, and her teammates were forced to leave the East London Gymnastic Centre in Beckton in December after the freeholder sold the site to a developer and a bid to prevent the sale failed.

A spokesperson for the proposed developer, Linea Homes, previously said the new tenant, which had not been named, would bring "significant health and social benefits" to the community and planned to retain the building as it was.

Olivia is now travelling more than an hour to clubs outside of her borough to train regularly.

"Even though we've lost the gym, they're still pushing themselves to do their best and to train hard and to reach their goals," her mother, Justyna Kosinska, told the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

Olivia was selected to represent both the England and Poland gymnastics squads but has chosen to represent the latter this year.

She has been training at Camden Gymnastics Club and Greenwich Royals Gymnastics Club in the interim.

"We are so grateful to those two clubs that they allowed our girls to actually have that opportunity to continue their training," Ms Kosinska said.

"[The travelling] costs us more as a family; the fees are much higher, and we've had to cover the travel costs as well.

"Even though we've lost the gym, they're still pushing themselves to do their best and to train hard and to reach their goals."

Kirk Zammit, who co-manages the charity that runs the East London Gymnastics Club (ELGC), said a long-term home needed to be found for the club soon.

"If a new permanent facility isn't found soon, the club will face closing their elite competitive squad programme," he said.

"We have GB squad gymnasts currently on target for the next Junior European Championships who may struggle to continue in the sport if a new location isn't found."

The club is understood to have viewed a number of locations but has not secured somewhere suitable.

The East London Gymnastic Centre opened its doors in 1997 with the help of National Lottery funding and has supported the careers of several top Olympians.

Hollywood actor Tom Holland also trained at the club in the past.

A Linea Homes spokesperson previously told the LDRS: "Our plans for the site focus on retaining the building and ensuring its financial viability. We have secured a new tenant who will bring significant health and social benefits to the community."

Regeneration scheme behind schedule, council says

by Isabella May 19, 2025
written by Isabella

A major regeneration project in Staffordshire is behind schedule, according to performance targets set by the local authority.

A planning application for the redevelopment of The Maltings site in Uttoxeter was due to be submitted in February.

The delay was caused by a decision to file separate applications for demolition of the shopping precinct and the regeneration work, bosses said.

The council said an application for the demolition was now due to be submitted this month.

East Staffordshire Borough Council bought the shopping centre in January, following its purchase of the former Co-op building in 2023 alongside the land that it already owns.

The council has previously committed to further improvements in the area, including refurbishing toilets on Bradley Street, upgrading connectivity from a bus station and car park to the high street, as well as installing improved lighting and seating, plus a full pedestrianisation of the high street.

In addition, 12 new electric vehicle charging stations have been installed in the car park.

A consultation on the proposed regeneration work began in May last year and has since ended.

Here's our weekly roundup of stories from across local websites in the West of England.

We have a daily round up as well. Make sure you look out for it on the website and the local section of the BBC News app.

What have been the big stories in the West this week?

The week was dominated by commemorations to mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, or VE Day. ITV West Country spoke to members of Bristol's Sikh community who came together at the Sikh war memorial in Castle Park to reflect on their contributions to the war effort.

Meanwhile, The Swindon Advertiser has spoken to a 99-year-old World War Two veteran about her VE Day memories

Bristol Rovers confirmed the return of Darrell Clarke this week as their new manager until 2028, six-and-a-half years on from his departure, reported Bristol Live. The previous head coach Inigo Calderon was sacked following the team's relegation from League One.

And finally, Gloucestershire Live reported a GoFundMe had started to raise money for a memorial in Bourton-on-the-Water, for two famous feathered citizens, George and Mildred – a pair of geese who were killed recently.

by Alexander April 29, 2025
written by Alexander

A trial date has been set for a man accused of stabbing a woman to death at a tower block on Merseyside.

Rebekah Campbell, 32, died in hospital after she was found badly injured at Knowsley Heights in Huyton on 15 April.

Michael Ormandy, 34, from Litherland, has been charged with her murder and appeared via videolink from HMP Liverpool at Liverpool Crown Court earlier.

He was refused bail and must remain in custody until a plea hearing on 7 July. A provisional trial date has been set for 6 October.

In a tribute last week, Ms Campbell was described by her family as "a happy young woman with her whole life ahead of her".

"Rebekah was our everything," they said, adding: "She had a genuine heart of gold. If it meant putting herself out to help someone, she wouldn't hesitate.

"We are so proud of her. She was a support for vulnerable people and would use her own experiences to make other lives better."

Council opens housing scheme to cut homelessness

by Sofia April 22, 2025
written by Sofia

A council has launched a scheme to help people at risk of homelessness find private accommodation.

Luton Borough Council's government-financed find your own home initiative was designed to cut council house waiting lists in the town, which can be up to 10 years.

The Labour-run authority said demand for housing assistance had reached "unprecedented levels", with the number of families seeking support rising from an average of 200 per month to 450.

Rob Roche, the council's portfolio holder for housing, said: "This is about families and giving them a decent home and if they have children, giving them a secure place to live."

Amy Holmes/BBC
Rob Roche from Luton Borough Council said he hoped the scheme would help people get help before they become at risk of being homeless

In Luton, more than 12,000 people are currently on the council's housing register, so the authority hoped this scheme will help some of them explore the private rental sector as a more immediate housing solution.

Roche said in the past people had "come to us with eviction dates" and they then had "to be put into temporary accommodation".

He added he hoped the scheme would help "get in there first before that happened".

A woman from Luton, who wished to remain anonymous, was one of the first to benefit from the scheme after being placed at first into temporary accommodation with her three children.

Her housing officer urged her to explore renting privately with council assistance instead and she now lives in a home close to her extended family.

She said she "needed to change for her kids and needed more structure and routine" and her "mental health was a lot better" in their new home.

Her children have "settled in really well and are pursuing their hobbies like cycling around friends and family" and they were able to recently celebrate Eid together, she added.

Amy Holmes/BBC
Matthew Bushnell from Mary Seacole Housing Association said he hoped the scheme would "alleviate stress and anxiety" over becoming homeless

The council worked on the scheme with the Mary Seacole Housing Association.

It creates personal plans for applicants, which look at their household size, potential disabilities, support needs and financial situation.

Matthew Bushnell, chief executive of Mary Seacole Housing Association, told the BBC that "homelessness can feel overwhelming" and that it was "quite easy to bury your head in the sand" if you were at risk of it happening to you.

He hoped this scheme would help "alleviate that stress and anxiety very early on".

He added that "if you are able to go through the private rental route" you are likely "to secure housing via a much faster process".

New £3.4m GP surgery to be built on old school site

by Emily April 20, 2025
written by Emily

A new £3.4m GP surgery is set to be built on the site of a former school.

Bedford Borough Council approved the new facility in the village of Great Barford, close to Bedford.

It said it plans to knock down the Great Barford Lower School building, on Silver Street, opposite the existing surgery and build a new larger practice with a car park.

The council will provide £1.9m with the rest set to come from the developers building 500 homes as part of the Millfield End scheme.

The council will also provide £470,000 to help cover the costs of the planning permission application, demolition of the existing building, and associated pre-demolition work, it added.

Conservative councillor Martin Towler, portfolio holder for neighbourhoods and communities: health and wellbeing, said: "We're committed to ensuring that all our residents have access to high-quality health facilities, regardless of their age, sex, background, or whether they live in our towns or villages.

"I know that the people of Great Barford will welcome this step forward, and that it will be a huge positive for future residents too."

A final decision lies with the Integrated Care Board, following engagement with patients, and the GP practice signing a lease agreement, the council added.

Local business owners welcome Superdrug

by Henry April 17, 2025
written by Henry

Superdrug's arrival in Guernsey has been met with optimism by two local business owners, who see the move as a boost for the island's retail scene.

Independent high street retailers said big brands opening shops in Guernsey such as Boots, Claire's and Superdry could be good for business.

Health and cosmetic store Superdrug was the latest to open in the island, at the former Smith Street post office in St Peter Port.

Natalia Sylvester, owner of several local businesses including Crêpe Maison, and Nick Martel, owner of Avant Garden, believed a balance between local and national stores was key to a thriving high street.

'Fabulous' shop

Ms Sylvester said: "It brings people to town and gives opportunity to smaller businesses who trade around to get that customer space as well."

The building where Superdrug was located closed as a post office about 16 years ago and since then had been used as a pound shop and also a pop-up charity shop.

Mr Martel echoed the sentiment, praising Superdrug's new store.

"I went in there this morning for the first time, and the shop is fabulous," he said.

"They've got staff behind the counters and on the shop floor, which some of the other big shops don't.

"I thought, wow, absolutely amazing."

Google
Avant Garden's owner has praised potential of increased footfall

Superdrug is a 60-year-old business with more than 750 stores across the UK, as well as a shop in Jersey.

Mr Martel also noted that increased foot traffic from both tourists and national retailers benefited his business.

"Not everybody is our customer, but the more people that come through the town and see us, brilliant," he said.

He's also optimistic about the future, particularly with new travel links between Guernsey and Jersey.

"People flying into Jersey might now pop to Guernsey for the day. That's amazing."

Teen arrested after knife incident outside school

by Ezra April 14, 2025
written by Ezra

A 17-year-old boy has been arrested following an incident involving a knife outside a school.

Thames Valley Police said it was called to Chiltern Hills Academy, in Chesham, Buckinghamshire, at about 15:00 BST on Wednesday, to reports of a male with a knife.

The teenager was arrested on suspicion of possession of a knife in a public place.

The state secondary school confirmed it was put into "lockdown" and at no point were students or staff in immediate danger.

The teenager has been released under investigation while inquiries continue, the force added.

"There were no reports of any threats made to anybody at the school and we believe this to be an isolated incident," the force said.

Tim Dobbs, the school's principal, said on its website that it was "advised by the police to put the school into lockdown".

"The police isolated this incident using a secure room in the reception area of the school," he said.

Students were kept in their classrooms but were allowed to leave the site by 15:45.

"I can inform you that at no point were students or staff in immediate danger, and the lockdown was conducted out of caution in accordance with our established safety procedures," he added.

Mr Dobbs thanked staff, students and parents for their understanding and support.
